Croatian Cultural Gazette - April 2021

(Slijedi prijevod na hrvatski)

Happy Spring! It is so lovely to see the sunshine after such a long and gloomy winter.

1. CROFEST AND OTHER EVENTS

Since the pandemic restrictions continue to impact how we congregate and communicate, we are unable to host CROfest 2021. However, we are hopeful that we will re-launch CROfest in 2022.

Our folklore group Zagreb was also unable to travel (for the second year in a row) to attend the Croatian Canadian Folklore Federation West (CCFFW) festival. The event that was supposed to have been held in Edmonton in 2020 and rescheduled to 2021 was cancelled. We anticipate a return to normal next year.

2. CROATIAN LANGUAGE SCHOOL PROGRAM

During this past year, we launched four Croatian language classes—introductory, beginners, intermediate, and advanced. A total of 30 adult learners attend the classes, which will run until June 2021.

Thank you to our instructors, Ivan Hrgovich, Josipa Stojković, Stanka Koren, and Mary Čolak for their dedication and support. However, CCSV extends a very special thank you to Ivan Hrgovich for his many years of Croatian language teaching in our community and sometimes being the only instructor to carry the school. Ivan was also instrumental in researching and implementing the use of the school’s   Croatian language textbooks that are currently used in our classrooms.

If you are interested in becoming a Croatian language instructor, please contact us for more information (info@ccsv.ca). We are always looking for qualified teachers.

Our language program is currently supported through Croatian grants, which allow us to pay a small stipend to our teachers and cover other school expenses.

Our next language class intake is in October 2021, so if you or someone you know is interested in learning (or re-learning) Croatian, now is the time to register! You can do so at https://ccsv.ca/class-registration.

Through a joint effort of CCSV’s Mary Čolak and Ana Bačić, Croatian Language Program Coordinator in Canada, CCSV is working on developing and implementing Croatian language broadly in British Columbia. This is a very exciting initiative that, if successful, will see students of Croatian language earning credit toward their provincial studies. We will keep you posted about our progress.

3. FOLKLORE AND CROATIA GRANT

In anticipation of in-person gatherings again, Croatia has approved 70.000 kn (about $14,000) in funding for CCSV to purchase new folklore costumes for our group, Zagreb. The slated costumes are from the Turopolje region, which will be highlighted at our next CROfest and CCFFW festival in 2022.

If you would like to join our folklore group—either as a dancer or musician—now is the time to register. Please contact info@ccsv.ca for more information.

Our folklore dance instructor, Suzi Matković and folklore music director, Hrvoje Kegalj look forward to expanding the group!

4. SUPPORT OUR FUNDRAISING!

In anticipation of CROfest 2021, Suzana Hedji, on behalf of CCSV, prepared sour cabbage heads for cabbage rolls (price: $10 for small, $15 for large).

Stephanie Kalabrić also still has some Croatian Dessert cookbooks for sale (author: Andrea Pisac) (price: $55 per book).

Please consider purchasing cabbage heads and cookbooks to show your support for CCSV and our work in promoting Croatian culture in the broader Victoria and Vancouver Island communities.

Contact info@ccsv.ca for more information or to place your order.

1. CROFEST I OSTALA DOGAĐANJA

Radi pandemije, naša folklorna skupina Zagreb nije mogla otputovati (drugu godinu zaredom) na festival Hrvatskog kanadskog folklornog saveza (CCFFW) u Edmonton 2020 i 2021.  godine. Očekujemo povratak u normalu sljedeće godine.

2. PROGRAM HRVATSKOG JEZIKA

Tijekom prošle godine pokrenuli smo četiri razreda hrvatskog jezika—uvodni, početni, srednji i napredni.

3. FOLKLOR I NOVČANA PODRŠKA DOMOVINE
